The Grange, on Rye Street Bishop’s Stortford

The Grange on Rye Street, Bishops Stortford

Work carried out within part of The Grange, on Rye Street, Bishop’s Stortford, has brought the second design award in 7 months. For this project MARLIN Design has been awarded Best Residential Architecture Studio, Southern England, by BUILD Magazine. The previous award, in October 2017, came from Harlow Civic Society.

Total refurbishment was carried out on one of the sub-divided units of the, Grade II listed, former home of Sir John Barker, founder of Barker’s of Kensington, the world’s first department store. Previously MARLIN Design Ltd had carried out a total refurbishment and reorganisation of the former Chauffer’s accommodation, at the top of Foxdells Lane, known as Barker’s Barn.

Since it’s refurbishment it has been discovered that the unit was formerly the Billiard Room. Bringing the basement into use has created a two floor one bedroom apartment with access to the basement area via a stunning cast stone spiral staircase. The original external stepped access to the basement has been enclosed to provide a feature within the basement which can be used as a small Conservatory area. Removal of the drab flat roofed porch has opened up the front elevation and returned it to it’s original state. MARLIN Design worked with East Herts Conservation team to secure Planning approval and Listed Building consent at the first attempt.
